Kelly Clarkson, Tom Waits, Lucinda Williams and many others place song in top 3.

Boise, ID singer/songwriter Nate Fowler wins 3rd place in the 2011 International Songwriting Competition with his song “Alive”. With over 16,000 entries from 112 countries, having a song in the top 3 is no small accomplishment. Candace Avery, founder and president of the organization says, “This is a remarkable achievement, and ISC and its judges applaud the skill and dedication to the craft of songwriting that this win has proven.” In June of 2011 Fowler’s song “Alive” was added to regular rotation on Idaho’s KRVB (94.9FM) and still remains in the rotation along with his follow up single, “What We’ve Started”. The first local act to be added to regular rotation on The River in years. In reference to “Alive” KRVB program director Dan McColly notes, “It’s just really unusual to find something that’s so well-written and well Produced that’s done locally. The panel of star studded judges including Kelly Clarkson, Lucinda Williams, and Tom Waits agreed by breaking the song to an international audience first in the top 68 through semi-finals in March of this year.

…at some point we’ve all wished our lives had a rewind button. Even those who say, “I don’t have any regrets, my past decisions define who I am today.” Okay, I believe you when you say that. I also believe we say things like that because we know there is absolutely no way to change what we’ve lived through- but we can create a box in which we place those things and label it “justification”. As long as I’m “OK” with it. I’ve said that too, I often say it. But what if we REALLY could start over. I know what I would do- buy Apple stock. Remember when it was $38 a share….yea, I was reminded of that just last night as I was watching it tick up past $640 per share.

No really, what if we could actually start over? I’m not simply referring to that paper we botched, the presentation that went catastrophic, the job interview we totally threw…but the bigger picture. The picture of ‘humanity’. If we could truly take back every word we ever spoken that tore another person down. The moment we realized we made an irreversible decision that would result in horrific consequence that would alter the course of the rest of our lives. What would happen if we REALLY live the way we think we do now. A good friend of mine put a simple status update on Facebook on Good Friday that read, “What if we really lived the way Christ died for us to live, this world would be such an amazing place.” By no means am I saying we need to live in the past- contrary- live in the NOW. Not just live like we THINK we’re living, but really DO the things we want our lives to reflect. That’s hard. It’s easy to think of myself as a nice, caring, tender hearted, generous person. Would others agree? The part that scares me is the fact that they might not. That’s a problem. It’s a problem because if I THINK I’m doing it right but others don’t see it….am I really DOING it right? We live in a society that pushes for us to be highly independent individuals- that’s fine, we need to be able to make our own decisions. But, is that really fine? It seems we are surrounded by depression, seclusion, disorders, suicide, etc…in a world where we have INSTANT connection via social networking- why are we so lonely? What if we could just start over? What if we could do this thing called life TOGETHER, with real people? It seems like we spend so much time ‘fighting’ just to make ends meet- who will rise to the top? Another friend of mine posted a Twitter update that said, “Careful of who you snub on the way up, those are the same people you’ll pass on your way down.” Wow, what a thought. Doesn’t it draw the picture of our society? We’re all trying to make our way ‘up’. Where exactly is ‘up’ and who are we willing to sacrifice to get there?

I wrote a new song with a friend of mine. A lot of our perspective came from this very idea:

”There’s more to this than our differences and living life divided

alone we could never be enough.

But together we could get it right, maybe we could just start over.

I believe we’ll fall alone but we could rise as one.”

We can’t change the things we’ve done. Cant take back the words we’ve said. But,we can work on becoming the person we THINK we are and know we want to be. Put more effort into sharing our love with others and spend more time putting others needs before our own. Imagine what the world would look like if we actually did love one another the way we think we already do. Together.

“Together we can get it right,

maybe we could just start over.

Together we could be the light, a voice as loud as thunder.”

…absolutely NOT, BUT…it’s been WAY to long since I’ve posted some updates. There has been a lot happening in this camp and a lot unfolding before the year is over. First, I’d like to THANK YOU! You are a listener, a supporter, and the reason that I get to make music, want to make music, and enjoy performing music. If you haven’t had a chance to pick up the new EP (“Through It All”) it’s on iTunes as I speak type. Seeing “Alive” doing it’s thing through the airwaves has been incredible.

….”ALIVE” music video in production and set to release Thanksgiving week!……..

I’m absolutely humbled and blessed to see how people are responding to this song and the new EP. After months and months in the studio- I’m still excited to see how people are responding to the new music. After being picked up by 94.9FM The River, “Alive” spent around 9 nonconsecutive weeks at #1 on their stations playlist! I just found out last week that The River has taken a liking to another track off the new EP called “What We’ve Started“ and that hit the airwaves last week! Thank you for visiting them on Facebook and emailing them in support of these new tunes.

What’s coming up…? Lots of shows. Parachutes new single, “Kiss Me Slowly”, continues to plow up the charts and I couldn’t be more happy for those guys. Sharing the stage with them for my CD release show last month was such a blast, to you Parachute, we salute you.

GRAB YOUR TICKETS, because on Dec. 6th it’s going to be a great night at The Knit with Mat Kearney. I’ll be heading out to one of my favorite places on earth, Nashville, TN right after Thanksgiving for a week of co-writing new music! I can’t wait to get back East and experience some WINTER Nashville weather and sit down with some amazing writers and producers and write…write…write…coffee…write…lunch while writing…coffee…write….dinner…write…sleep….repeat. Brand new full length record 2012….???

Make sure to come visit me over on Facebook- all the kids are raving about it. I’m also putting random thoughts and opinions over on Twitter as well. Stay tuned- it always sounds better that way…

Be blessed,

It has been an awesome process putting together this new EP. I’m so excited that it’s finally getting closer to completion and READY for your ears. We have officially began taking pre-orders for the new project. You may be asking, “why would I pre-order and what exactly does that mean?”. Well, great question. If you KNOW you’re going to want this EP, which I sure hope you do, why wait? Even though you may not receive your physical copy of the EP for another few weeks it REALLY helps me, the artist, when making physical orders. This EP is going to be equipped with full artwork and lyrics for all 6 songs and the bonus track remix!

Order now and you’ll receive your instant download of my new single “Alive“. Then, as SOON as the EP is finished I’ll send you the downloadable version of the album so you can start listening and enjoying while your physical copy makes it’s way to your door.

Nate Fowler says he loves playing in Boise and has no immediate plans to tour. “I’m just not quite sure yet,” he says. “ I’m just going to see what some of these doors open up to.”

—

Boise musicians rarely hear their music played on commercial radio, but it’s happening to 25-year-old Nate Fowler and his cathartic pop-rock anthem, “Alive.” Rock station 94.9 FM The River put the song in light rotation in April then bumped it up to 20 spins a week in June — the first time a local act has been on the everyday playlist in years. “It’s just really unusual to find something that’s so well-written and well-produced that’s done locally,” explains program director Dan McColly. Because record labels monitor station’s playlists, Fowler is drawing attention from the national music industry; he’s traveling to Nashville for a business meeting next week. Fowler’s seven-song EP, tentatively titled “Through It All,” will be available for pre-order by Friday at natefowlermusic.com.

Besides the celebratory, inspirational vibe that permeates “Alive,” what is the song about?

I definitely want the song to mean something different to everyone. That’s how I write — I want people to feel like they can own what these lyrics are saying. Like if they put it in their car, it’s like “Hey, this totally explains my relationship with my kid.” Or “This totally explains my relationship with my husband.”

But for me, it’s exactly what it’s saying: There’s so many things to get caught up in and get overwhelmed in, but at the end of the day it’s just stopping and saying, “Man, what a blessing it is just to be alive.” To not get caught up overanalyzing life and just live it.

Your song “Hurricane” was the Gospel Music Association’s Immerse song of the year in 2010. Do you mind being called a Christian artist?

I don’t mind being called a Christian artist, because I am a Christian. But at the same time, I don’t want to label what I create and put it in a box. That’s kind of a funny thing, because this whole mainstream versus Christian industry — I think that’s changing. I think there’s a sense in the mainstream secular industry of positive, encouraging messages that aren’t even necessarily “Christian messages” that are really being embraced by listeners.

Will the EP have another song that matches the radio potential of “Alive”?

Actually, it’s kind of funny, because I don’t know what anybody’s perspective’s going to be. Because after “Alive” kind of started doing its thing, and The River started picking up on it, and I started getting some hands reaching out on a national level, I kind of got a little nervous. I told my wife, like, “Crap, I gotta deliver something here!” I’m already feeling this pressure, like, “OK, this guy — was that one song he got lucky on, and that’s it?” But like I said, stop analyzing this and just kick back. Make music that you enjoy playing and let it be that.

“Call Me Family” by Nate Fowler in support of Courage To Be You in fighting human trafficking.

There are a couple of reasons why viewer discretion is advised before watching this music video. “Call Me Family” is a song written with the sole intent of being a voice for the innocent that are living through human trafficking or have been rescued out of trafficking. I cannot imagine what this feels like. The thoughts, feelings, emotions. I’m sure you cant imagine either. Discretion is advised because when you watch this video you may feel like “that’s over the top” or “they didn’t need to show that”. Well, why not? Should we edit the fact that this is a dirty thing and pretend that this isn’t really how it is. Truly, this video is a CLEAN edit of what is happening in our cities, in this country, and around the world. Discretion is advised because if you watch this video you may just feel inclined to do something about it. You may just feel like being a part of the voice that is shouting for those who have been silenced.

Warning- you may feel the need to do something. If you feel that way, do not be alarmed. It’s a natural reaction. It’s natural to feel that a child between 8-13 years old should not be sold for sex. It’s natural to feel like there is absolutely no excuse to put this truth aside and continue living in ignorance. It’s totally natural- and it’s awesome! This is the feeling that I was blessed to get over two years ago when I first heard the term “human trafficking”. It’s exciting to know that we are making a difference. We are getting loud. People are getting nervous, uncomfortable, resistant. It’s awesome. Discretion is advised- gaining knowledge about human trafficking may spark the uncontrollable urge to fight for justice. Thank you for watching. If you watch this video and would like to learn more about how you can partner to combat human justice- join the street team. Please feel free to share this video- help give a voice to those who are silenced, at least silent until we find them.

I’m a results oriented kind of person- it just really excites me when I get to see something “finished”. I think that’s why I enjoy vacuuming. When you’ve run over that patch of carpet and you can see your fresh, clean, lines- that’s therapy. I love that. I also love getting the opportunity to share with all of you what we’ve been working on for the past few months.

The Mix House Studio- Scott Pergende

This new song, “Alive”, is meant to be an anthem. An anthem that we can turn up louder than our speakers can handle and sing out together what a blessing it is to be alive. I know it’s a simple concept- but when you really stop to think about what it is to be alive it is truly humbling and most of us take it for granted every day. We spend more time focusing on the lack of things we have, the lack of love we share, the lack of this or the lack of that- I want to watch the sunrise today to feel a new beginning on my face and truly embrace the new day that I have to be alive. Nothing is certain in this life, nothing is matter of fact. The only fact that we can truly rely on is there is a beauty within that can shine through and bring light to the darkest of any moment. It’s up to us to decide if we are going to CHOOSE to be alive or live for nothing.

Production

You can take on the world and decide that you have had enough of whatever it may be that is holding you down. The feeling of being alive is one that comes from within, it is not based on things happening around you. Allow the lies to fade away and YELL it out that you are feeling alive! You can do this because you are alive, you are taking this moment to watch a new sunrise on a new chance to LIVE.

I cant thank you enough for being a part of this journey with me and allowing music to be like therapy of vacuuming. I get to make music because of your love and support and for that, I thank you. This song will be releasing on iTunes and in stores in a few weeks. For now, please help spread the word and encourage others to sing out this anthem with you! I hope you enjoy the song. More footage and photos from the studio coming soon.

Until next time,

It’s been an amazing journey to partner with Courage To Be You based in Sacramento, CA and their fight against human trafficking. There is strength in numbers- and C2BU is getting stronger with YOUR love and support! I’m honored and privileged to have my song “Call Me Family” produced into a music video to benefit the Courage House and continue to extend the reach of loving hands throughout the community and to those who need love the most. The vision of this team for this song is exciting and powerful and I cannot wait to share it with you. We’ll be joining forces with mix engineer Ralph Stover (Producer of “Believe In Me” CD) and Aaron Schnobrich (Video producer of “Believe In Me” and Paramores “Playing God” and “The Only Exception”).
“CALL ME FAMILY” Official Music Video to Release May 2011

I met Nate Fowler through his music. At the time, I was on my way to Boise, Idaho to speak at a Courage Conference hosted by C2BU and Nate’s church, Foothills Christian Church. Nate and I spoke on the phone a few times prior to the conference. I had no idea during those conversations that God had broken Nate’s heart for children rescued out of sex trafficking until I listened to his song “Call Me Family” on his website.

The words pierced my soul.

I literally heard the voices of children from around the world singing with Nate, asking me and asking the church… who will call me family?

I am thrilled that Nate has joined our efforts at C2BU to build Courage Houses—homes for victims rescued out of sex trafficking—by performing (when his schedule allows) at our benefit concert/sex trafficking awareness events. The first time I heard Nate perform at one of our concerts, a young woman who knows firsthand the horrors of being sold for sex, told Nate that his song was her prayer and that, through the efforts of C2BU, she now has a family.

Nate’s song should challenge us all!

C2BU is excited to partner with Nate, as well as Aaron Schnobrich, the producer of C2BU’s Believe in Me video, to create a music video for “Call Me Family.” Production on this project began in early February 2011, with an expected release date of May 2011. Thank you Nate for allowing God to use your voice and your music to bring attention to this vulnerable and often invisible population!

Jenny Williamson,

Founder, C2BU

Looking back on it now- it all makes sense! As many of you know I had the opportunity to play “Concert for Cause” this year with Shawn Mullins put on by 94.9FM The River. It was a great event- great turnout and lots of money raised for Family Advocates. About a week ago I started getting really bad headaches. These headaches began getting worse and on Sunday night I had a bad fever. It felt a lot like flu symptoms without the stomach stuff. I got a bit concerned because I had a busy week scheduled. Radio interview with The River on Tuesday morning and the concert on Wednesday night. Monday I dealt with fever on and off but tried to go about my day- while drinking a 59oz. orange juice. Things kept getting worse but I simply took more ibuprofen. Tuesday morning came and I woke up very early with a fever, headache, and sore throat. I made some tea and took more ibuprofen- thinking this was a nasty head cold. By Wednesday I thought that things were looking up but before I left the house I noticed a bump on my forehead- looked closer and noticed hives on my face. So I thought…

After my set at the concert I could not believe how horrible I felt- things were getting worse. The next morning I went to the doctor and checked myself in with “hives” and “headaches“. After going through the common questions and basic procedures the doctor looked at me- trying not to smile- and said “you have chicken pox”. I could not believe this. I chuckled and said, “I’m 25 years old”. She replied chuckling, “25 and with chicken pox.”. I know, it’s hard not to laugh but these things are vicious. Here I am sitting at home on Saturday night- calendar cleared- my wife is out enjoying a girls night and I just beat Angry Birds and finished 3 DVD’s. Looking back on it now- it all makes sense! Be sure to check out the video from studio on Facebook: CLICK HERE

Two brand NEW songs are ALMOST done! Cant wait to share this new music with you all. I appreciate your love and support and please- have a MERRY CHRISTMAS and be thankful for health, happiness, friends and family this Holiday season.

Be blessed,

The global epidemic of human trafficking is gaining a lot of attention lately. There are more news headlines and media outlets that are gaining traction and helping spur the movement of a social revolution in recognizing the need to bring social justice issues to the forefront of our generation. About a year and half ago I learned the term “human trafficking”. After watching a short documentary I went home and sat- looking down on my guitar trying to process what I had just watched. I began to pen out thoughts of what a young child, young girl, caught in this life may be going through. That evening the song “Call Me Family” was written and in the studio within two weeks. At the time I had no idea what this song was going to do or the reason I felt so strongly about this song being produced.

Months went by and the song was just a song- just within the past 6 months the song came to life in the most real way I could ever imagine. I was asked to play “Call Me Family” at a conference in Boise, ID and there I met Jenny Williamson. Jenny is passionate about human trafficking- not only bringing awareness to the issue but being the hands and feet that implement. A year ago I sat and listened to Jenny share her amazing dream of opening a “safe house” in California that girls rescued from prostitution and trafficking could call home. At this safe house these girls would be called family, have proper counseling and loving support, while being in a safe environment offering a place for healing and unconditional love. I was invited to Sacramento, CA to play the song at a “Courage To Be You” benefit concert to help build that dream home- the “Courage House”. At the end of the night I was absolutely floored when a young girl who was rescued out of forced sexual exploitation by the FBI approached me and said, “you’re song, ‘Call Me Family’, that’s exactly what I’ve been saying and feeling as long as I can remember- now I have a family”. There is nothing more real than that- the purpose of this song has now become so clear. As I sit here tonight in a Starbucks in Sacramento I’m happy to say that Jenny Williamsons dream has come true- the safe house has become reality.

Jenny Williamson (founder of Courage To Be You)

This morning I was honored to visit the California state FBI headquarters and witness Jenny receive one of the FBI’s most prestigious awards- the FBI community leadership award for her efforts in partnering and combating the social injustice of human trafficking. Joined by California Congressman Dan Lungren and the head officials of the California FBI agency, Jenny graciously received the award and made note that this is just the beginning- now we start bringing these girls into our home to call them our family. What an amazing moment an awesome experience. After being a part of the benefit concerts to get the home, I’m now blessed to be a part of the benefit concerts that encourage others to be a part of this amazing journey. To reach out, pull these girls in, and love them as our own family.

I’m very excited to begin working on songs as part of the new Courage To Be You CD project. “Call Me Family” is being produced into a music video that will help illustrate the life and love that these girls are being pulled in to through the work at the Courage House and help remind us all of how real this actually is and your efforts through partnership becoming tangible.

This problem is about more than “some”, it’s about all of us and how we can get involved to be part of the “family”. A family of people that choose not to focus on our differences but find strength in our commonality- sexually exploiting a child is not okay. We are caught in the middle of the largest social injustice of our generation. It’s our moment, our time to stand together in unity and break down the walls of opinions, religion, philosophy, politics, and embrace the fact that a young generation of humanity is a stake.

If you’d like to learn more about the Courage House and Courage To Be You please click HERE.

As Jenny would remind you- “You are created on purpose, for a purpose”.

It’s been almost a year since the release of “Wherever You Go” EP and I’ve been itching to record some new music. The past year has been full of some great shows, meeting great people and great musicians, and writing new material. I’ve also partnered with a couple of organization to help bring awareness to the social injustice of human trafficking. There are very exciting things in motion with Full Circle Exchange and the “Wake Up To Justice” tour. 2011 will mark a new chapter with the release of a full length album. This album will be 13 songs produced right here in Boise, ID by owner and senior engineer of The Mix House, Scott Pergande. We’ve already spent some time in the studio charting out this new album and are excited to see where these new tracks go.

Scott Pergande (Left) Fowler (Right) The Mix House, Boise.

This album is going to be a unique experience. Brand new fully produced songs will meet with fresh remixes of tracks from “Wherever You Go”. Part of my vision for this record is to go back to my roots of bare acoustic. We’ll add some new songs in raw acoustic format purposefully stripped down and delivered to you exactly as is. I’m going to be challenging myself with this new album and venturing into new territory. We look forward to taking our time allowing the songs to develop and the players on the project to create their interpretations of what the songs are calling for. Taking the wheel of production will be Scott Pergande. Scott specializes in mixing and receives projects from all over America and Europe to mix. He has mixed songs on projects that included world-class mix engineers Chris Lord-Alge and Bob Clearmountain, which is clearly a statement to his quality of work. He’s had several of his mixes chart in top-40 radio.

Tyler Burkum

Part of what will help shape the sound of this new album are the players that will be joining the efforts. I’m excited to have my good friend and amazing musician Tyler Burkum (Audio Adrenaline, Mat Kearney) featured on the record. He is a 2 time Grammy award winning guitarist that blends both new and old into a breath of fresh tonal creativity. Since touring the world with Audio Adrenaline, Tyler has shared the stage with numerous acts such as John Mayer and Sheryl Crow and also has a successful singer/songwriter career. He currently tours with Aware/Columbia recording artist Mat Kearney.

Shortly after receiving word that Tyler was in on the project I was pointed to Jeremy Lutito (Mat Kearney, Jars Of Clay) for producing “Wherever You Go” remixes. Jeremy has a style of his own and is a master of hearing the possibilities of the song and bringing those possibilities to life. He will be taking songs from the currently released “Wherever You Go” EP and putting his fresh twist of musicality and creativity to capture a whole new sound within the song that will flow into the musical style and feel of the new album. Jeremy currently tours with Mat Kearney and Jars of Clay. I look forward to hearing Jeremy’s vision of these songs and cant wait to share them with you.

Jeremy McCoy

On bass, we’ll be recruiting help from Jeremy McCoy (The Fray, OneRepublic). In November 2008, Jeremy began traveling with Interscope Records recording artists OneRepublic. Jeremy would play bass for Brent Kutzle when Brent moved to Cello during the live performances. As of February 2009, Jeremy is playing bass on the road with Epic Records artists The Fray. With The Fray, Jeremy has made television appearances on Late Night with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Good Morning America, Today (NBC program), and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Please stay tuned as I’ll be consistently sending out updates regarding the new project as well as “sneak peaks” from inside the studio. We are putting a tentative release date of March 15th, 2011 on this project. This is going to be an amazing experience and I look forward to sharing it with you as this album begins to take shape. Thank you so much for your love and support!

I’m very excited to announce that my new song “Hurricane” was named the Gospel Music Associations IMMERSE song of the year! IMMERSE is a national conference put on by the GMA that brings together new artists as well as award winning performers and industry executives for a week of training with song and artist competition at Belmont University in Nashville, TN.
